Made for skin.
Details that matter.
Cannabis topicals combine cannabinoids with formulas intended for use on skin, from balms and lotions to roll-ons. Get to know the formats, read beyond the milligram number, and understand how conventional topicals differ from transdermal products before you browse.

01 / Know the formats
Format is not a formula.
- 01
Balms & salves
Usually thicker, oil- or wax-based formulas supplied in jars or sticks. Texture describes the base, not the cannabinoid content or whether the product is transdermal.
- 02
Lotions & creams
Often softer emulsions packaged in pumps, tubes or jars. Review the full ingredient list, including fragrances, preservatives and potential allergens.
- 03
Roll-ons
An applicator format that dispenses a liquid or gel directly onto skin. A cooling or warming sensation may come from other ingredients and does not measure cannabinoid absorption.
02 / Read the label
Look beyond the milligrams.
- THC / CBD
- Check whether cannabinoid amounts are listed per container, per patch or per application. A ratio describes relative amounts, not an application size. More milligrams do not establish better quality or a predictable experience.
- Contents
- Read the complete ingredient list, not just the cannabis content. Carrier oils, waxes, fragrances, menthol and other ingredients can affect skin feel and suitability. Check for ingredients you know you react to.
- Use
- Confirm whether the formula is conventional topical or transdermal. Read application directions, warnings, batch information and expiration guidance. Skin-use products are not intended to be swallowed or inhaled.

04 / Know what's inside
Topical is not transdermal.
The way a product is formulated matters more than the container it comes in. Conventional topicals are generally intended for local skin application, not delivery into circulation. Transdermal formulas are designed to carry cannabinoids through the skin into the bloodstream. Read the label rather than assuming all skin-applied products behave alike.
- Conventional topical
- Generally not expected to cause intoxication when used as directed on intact skin. This does not mean every formula is suitable for everyone.
- Transdermal
- May come as a patch or another specially formulated product. THC-containing transdermals can produce systemic effects and impairment.
- Cannabinoid ratios
- THC, CBD and other cannabinoid amounts describe composition. A balanced ratio does not guarantee a particular effect or eliminate THC-related risks.
- The rest of the formula
- Oils, waxes, fragrances and adhesives also matter. Plant-based or naturally scented does not mean allergen-free or irritation-free.
These distinctions are not medical claims or safety ratings. If you take medications or have questions about suitability, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use.

05 / Care in application
The label comes first.
Topicals are not interchangeable with everyday cosmetics or with one another. Check the intended application area, amount and frequency before use. Do not add heat, cover the area tightly or layer products unless the label specifically allows it.
Prepare: Check ingredients and follow any small-area test instructions. Apply only to the skin areas permitted by the label; avoid eyes, mucous membranes and broken skin.
Handle: Keep hands and applicators clean. Close containers promptly and wash hands after handling unless the label directs otherwise for a hand application.
Follow through: Respect reapplication intervals and patch wear times. Do not cut patches unless expressly permitted. Dispose of used patches as directed, securely away from children and pets.
Stop use if irritation develops. Keep children and pets from contacting or licking recently applied product. If an unexpected reaction occurs, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
06 / A few more answers
Topicals FAQ.
From cannabinoid amounts to skin sensitivity and transdermal formulas, a few practical details to know before you browse.
Will a cannabis topical make me feel high?
Conventional, non-transdermal topicals are generally not expected to cause intoxication when used as directed on intact skin. Transdermal products are different: they are formulated to deliver cannabinoids through the skin into circulation, and those containing THC may cause impairment. Do not assume every skin-applied product works the same way. Read its formulation, warnings and intended use.
What do milligrams and ratios on a topical mean?
Milligrams may describe the cannabinoid content of the entire container, one patch or a labeled amount. Check which quantity the label refers to. A 1:1 THC:CBD ratio describes equal relative amounts of those cannabinoids, not how much to apply or a guaranteed effect. Container weight and cannabinoid content are different measurements.
How long does a topical take to work?
There is no universal onset or duration for this category. Formulation, application area and individual factors vary, and transdermal products have their own instructions. Do not repeatedly reapply simply because you do not notice a sensation. Follow the labeled amount, application interval and, for patches, wear time.
Can I use a topical on sensitive or broken skin?
Check the full ingredient list for known allergens and follow any label directions for testing a small area first. Avoid broken or irritated skin, eyes and mucous membranes unless the product is specifically labeled for that use. Stop using it if irritation develops. Ask a qualified healthcare professional about persistent symptoms or suitability for sensitive skin.
Can I see laboratory results for a topical?
Ask the retailer whether a batch-specific certificate of analysis, often called a COA, is available. Match the batch or lot identifier to the package and review the cannabinoid information and available contaminant screening. A laboratory report does not establish a medical benefit, rule out ingredient allergies or guarantee your experience.
