One cannabinoid.
Details that matter.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the cannabinoids found in cannabis. From oils and capsules to topicals and patches, the format is only part of the story. Get to know the ingredients, read the CBD and THC amounts, and understand the label before you browse.

01 / Know the formats
Format is just the beginning.
- 01
Oils & tinctures
Liquid formulations may list CBD by bottle, serving or milliliter. Check the carrier ingredients and measuring instructions. An oral oil is not a vape liquid and should never be inhaled.
- 02
Edibles & capsules
CBD can be included in capsules, gummies and beverages, sometimes alongside THC or other cannabinoids. Check the amount per unit and servings per package. Effects can be delayed.
- 03
Topicals & patches
Balms, lotions and transdermal patches have different intended uses. Products applied to skin are not interchangeable, and a patch is not simply a balm in another format. Follow its specific label.
02 / Read the label
Look beyond the CBD number.
- Amounts
- Distinguish CBD per serving from CBD in the entire package. Milligrams measure cannabinoid amount; milliliters measure liquid volume. A bottle total or net weight is not a recommended serving.
- THC & ratios
- CBD products can contain THC. Read each cannabinoid amount and the order of any ratio, such as CBD:THC. A higher CBD ratio does not guarantee no impairment or cancel the effects of THC.
- Contents
- Check ingredients, allergens, intended use, warnings, batch identifier and storage directions. Carrier oils, fragrances and other ingredients vary. A product name or spectrum label does not guarantee an effect.

04 / Know what's inside
The spectrum is not a promise.
Spectrum terms describe an extract's intended composition, not a guaranteed experience. Producers use these terms differently, so read the ingredient list and batch-specific laboratory report together. The source plant alone does not tell you how much THC is in the finished product.
- Full-spectrum
- Generally includes CBD alongside other plant compounds and may include THC. The amounts vary by formulation and batch.
- Broad-spectrum
- Generally contains multiple plant compounds with THC removed or reduced. The label alone does not prove that THC is absent.
- CBD isolate
- CBD separated from other plant compounds. Finished products may contain carrier ingredients or added cannabinoids, so check the full formulation.
- Cannabinoid blends
- CBD may be combined with THC, CBN, CBG or other cannabinoids. Read each amount separately rather than relying on a blend name.
These terms are not safety ratings. Neither a spectrum label nor a THC-free claim guarantees a negative drug test. CBD content does not make a product risk-free.

05 / Use as labeled
Different formats. Different directions.
CBD is an ingredient, not a universal set of instructions. An oral oil, a topical balm and a transdermal patch deliver ingredients differently. Do not swallow skin-only products or inhale oral oils. Transdermal products are designed for absorption through the skin and should not be treated as ordinary lotions.
Directions: Check the route of use, labeled serving or application instructions and warnings. Do not assume the directions for one product apply to another.
Timing: Onset and duration vary by formulation and person. Swallowed products can have delayed effects. Do not take more simply because an effect is not immediate.
Precautions: CBD can cause drowsiness and interact with medicines. Consult a pharmacist or clinician about interactions, and avoid combining it with alcohol.
Do not drive or operate machinery if drowsy or impaired. Products containing THC can cause intoxication even when CBD is also present. Avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
06 / A few more answers
CBD FAQ.
From cannabinoid ratios to hemp labels and laboratory reports, a few practical details to know before you browse.
Is CBD the same as THC?
No. Cannabidiol, or CBD, and tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, are different cannabinoids. CBD does not produce the characteristic THC high, but it can cause side effects such as drowsiness. A product labeled CBD can also contain THC or other cannabinoids. Check the full cannabinoid information rather than assuming it is non-intoxicating.
Does hemp-derived mean THC-free?
No. Hemp-derived describes the plant source, not a guarantee that the finished product contains no THC. Full-spectrum hemp products can contain THC, and other formulations may have detectable amounts. Check the batch-specific laboratory report and the actual amount per serving. CBD products can lead to a positive drug test; no label can guarantee a negative result.
What do CBD:THC ratios mean?
A ratio describes the relative amounts of the named cannabinoids, in the order printed. A 2:1 CBD:THC ratio means twice as much CBD as THC, not two milligrams of CBD. The same ratio can appear on products with very different amounts per serving. Read the milligrams of each cannabinoid separately. CBD does not reliably cancel THC impairment.
Can CBD interact with medications?
Yes. CBD can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines and can affect how some drugs are processed. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before use if you take medication or have a health condition. Avoid CBD during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not replace prescribed care with a retail CBD product.
What should I look for in laboratory results?
Ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis, often called a COA, and match its batch or lot identifier to the package. Look for CBD, THC and other cannabinoid measurements, their units, and relevant contaminant testing. Not detected means below the test detection limit, not proof of absolute zero. Testing does not make a product risk-free or guarantee an individual experience.
