Small flower.
A lot to discover.
Cannabis flower is the dried, cured bud of the cannabis plant. Get to know its details, read beyond the THC number, and learn how to keep it fresh.

01 / Know the anatomy
More than a green bud.
- 01
Trichomes
The tiny resin glands on the flower produce cannabinoids and terpenes. They give buds their frosted appearance.
- 02
Pistils
These fine, hairlike structures often turn orange or brown as the flower matures. Their color alone does not tell you potency.
- 03
Bracts
These small, overlapping plant structures form much of the bud. Their surfaces are covered with resin glands.
02 / Read the label
Look beyond the percentage.
- THC
- A potency measure, not a quality score. Higher THC does not automatically mean a better experience.
- Terpenes
- Aromatic compounds that contribute citrus, pine, floral or earthy notes. Look for a terpene profile when available.
- Type
- Indica, sativa and hybrid are broad labels, not guarantees of effects. Individual responses and product profiles vary.

04 / Follow the aroma
A profile, not a promise.
A flower's scent comes from a mixture of aromatic compounds. Citrus, pine, pepper and floral notes can help you describe what you enjoy, but a familiar smell does not guarantee a particular effect. Use aroma as one detail alongside the label.
- Limonene
- Citrus notes
- Pinene
- Pine notes
- Caryophyllene
- Peppery notes
- Linalool
- Floral notes
These are common associations, not a complete profile. Multiple compounds overlap, and not every product lists individual terpenes.

05 / Check the finer details
Freshness has a backstory.
After harvest, flower is dried and cured under controlled conditions. This process reduces moisture and influences aroma and texture. Buds naturally vary in density, size and color, so appearance alone cannot establish quality, potency or safety. Pair visual details with the product's packaging information.
Dates: Check harvest or package dates when listed.
Packaging: Look for an intact seal and clear batch information.
Condition: Avoid flower with visible mold or an unusual musty smell.
If something seems off, stop using it and contact the retailer.
06 / A few more answers
Flower FAQ.
From package sizes to lab reports, a few practical details to know before you browse.
What do an eighth, a quarter and a half mean?
These are common shorthand names for package weights: an eighth is typically 3.5 grams, a quarter is 7 grams, and a half is 14 grams. Check the listed net weight before ordering. Package weight describes the amount of flower, not a recommended serving.
How are smalls different from shake?
Smalls are smaller, intact buds. Shake is loose flower material that collects as buds are handled and packaged; its composition varies by producer. Neither term is a standardized quality grade. Read the product description to see exactly what is being sold.
What is infused flower?
Infused flower has added cannabis material, such as concentrate or kief. Moonrocks are one example. It is a different product from plain flower and may be substantially more potent. Check the ingredients and cannabinoid information rather than assuming it is interchangeable with an uninfused bud.
Is the same strain name identical across different growers?
Not necessarily. A shared name does not guarantee identical genetics or an identical product. Growing conditions, plant selection and processing can all differ. Compare the producer and batch information instead of relying on the strain name alone.
Can I see laboratory results for a flower product?
Ask the retailer whether a batch-specific certificate of analysis, often called a COA, is available. Match its batch or lot identifier to the package. A report may include cannabinoid measurements and contaminant screening. It describes the tested sample, not a guarantee of your individual experience or zero risk.
