Details that matter.
Cannabis tinctures are liquid formulations that may contain THC, CBD or a combination of cannabinoids. The dropper is only part of the story. Get to know the base ingredients, understand milligrams and milliliters, and read the product's directions before you browse.

01 / Know the formulations
Not every drop is the same.
- 01
Oil-based drops
Cannabinoids are blended into a carrier such as MCT or another edible oil. Check the ingredients, allergens and labeled route of use. Oral oils are not vape liquids and should never be inhaled.
- 02
Alcohol-based tinctures
Traditional tinctures use an alcohol-containing base. Alcohol content, flavor and directions vary. Read the full ingredient list, especially if you need to avoid alcohol.
- 03
Emulsified liquid drops
Some liquids are formulated to disperse in water or are marketed as fast-acting. Neither claim guarantees a particular onset. Only mix into food or drinks if the product directions allow it.
02 / Read the label
Milligrams are not milliliters.
- Amounts
- Milligrams (mg) measure cannabinoid amount. Milliliters (mL) measure liquid volume. Distinguish the total in the bottle from the amount per serving or per mL. A bottle total is not a recommended serving.
- THC & ratios
- Read THC, CBD and any other cannabinoid amounts separately. Ratios describe relative amounts, not overall strength. A CBD-forward tincture can still contain enough THC to cause intoxication.
- Contents
- Check carrier oils, alcohol, flavorings, allergens, intended use, warnings and batch information. Match the package to its laboratory report when available. Liquid color and bottle size do not indicate potency.

04 / Know what's inside
The blend matters. So does the base.
A tincture combines cannabinoid ingredients with a liquid base. Two bottles with the same CBD:THC ratio can have different concentrations, ingredients and directions. Read the complete formulation rather than choosing by the bottle name alone.
- THC-containing
- THC can cause intoxication and impairment. Check the amount per labeled serving, even when CBD or other cannabinoids are also included.
- CBD-forward & blends
- CBD-forward does not mean THC-free. Read every cannabinoid amount; a ratio or blend name does not guarantee a particular experience.
- Extract composition
- Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate describe intended composition. Usage varies by producer, so confirm the ingredients and batch-specific testing.
- Carrier ingredients
- Oils, alcohol, emulsifiers and flavorings vary. Check allergens and suitability for the labeled route. An edible carrier does not make a liquid safe to inhale.
These descriptions are not safety ratings. A spectrum label or THC-free claim does not guarantee a negative drug test. Ask for the batch-specific certificate of analysis if you need help confirming what's in the bottle.

05 / Use as labeled
Measure carefully. Give it time.
Some tinctures are labeled for use under the tongue; others are intended to be swallowed or mixed into food or drinks. These routes are not interchangeable. Follow the instructions on the actual product rather than applying another bottle's directions.
Measurement: Check the labeled serving volume and corresponding cannabinoid amounts. Use the supplied marked device, not a household spoon. Follow any shaking instructions.
Timing: Onset and duration vary by formulation, route and person. Swallowed THC may take hours to reach its full effects. Do not take more simply because you do not feel an immediate effect.
Precautions: THC and CBD can interact with medications. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about interactions or health concerns, and avoid combining cannabis with alcohol.
Do not drive or operate machinery after using THC or if drowsy or impaired. CBD does not reliably cancel THC impairment. Avoid cannabis during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Tinctures FAQ.
From dropper measurements to cannabinoid ratios and timing, a few practical details to know before you browse.
What is a cannabis tincture?
In cannabis retail, tincture commonly describes a liquid cannabinoid formulation supplied with a dropper or another measuring device. Traditionally, a tincture is alcohol-based, but many products sold under that name use carrier oils instead. Check the ingredients and labeled route of use rather than assuming every bottle works the same way.
Is a full dropper always one serving?
No. Dropper sizes, markings and liquid concentrations vary. A dropperful is not a standardized volume, and a single drop is not the same as a milliliter. Use the supplied measuring device and the volume printed in the product directions. If the markings or serving instructions are unclear, ask the retailer or manufacturer before using it.
How long do tinctures take to work?
Timing depends on the formulation, route of use and individual. Products labeled for use under the tongue may begin acting sooner than swallowed products, but some liquid is usually swallowed and effects can overlap. Swallowed THC can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to begin, sometimes longer, and may take up to 4 hours to reach its full effects. Effects can last for several hours. Follow the label and do not take more simply because an effect is not immediate.
What do CBD:THC ratios mean?
A ratio compares the named cannabinoids in the order printed. A 2:1 CBD:THC ratio means twice as much CBD as THC, not two milligrams of CBD. Products with the same ratio can have very different amounts per serving. Read the milligrams of each cannabinoid separately. CBD does not reliably cancel THC impairment.
Can I add a tincture to food or drinks?
Only if its directions allow that use. An oil-based liquid may not mix evenly into a drink, so do not assume every sip contains the same amount. Swallowed tincture follows an oral route with potentially delayed effects. Never put an oral tincture in a vaporizer, smoke it or use it as a topical unless the product is specifically labeled for that route.
